Day 02: Foundations of Urban Sketching

• July 2nd

The first full day begins with a morning session where you’ll dive into the fundamentals of urban sketching, focusing on perspective theory through an engaging and interactive presentation. After lunch, we’ll head outdoors to Prague’s stunning Old Town for group sketching sessions led by both Alán and David. You’ll break into smaller groups, each with one of your instructors, to sketch key landmarks while refining your technique. In the evening, we’ll enjoy a traditional Czech dinner together, where you can share your experiences, discuss creative processes, and bond with the group.

Day 03: Exploring Styles & Techniques

• July 3rd

On Day 3, we’ll take a deeper dive into urban sketching styles and techniques. In the morning, we’ll focus on shadow techniques and sketching people within architectural contexts. After lunch, you’ll head back outdoors to explore one of Prague’s most iconic historical sites, such as Prague Castle or Charles Bridge, applying what you’ve learned in a real-world setting. In the evening, either Alán or David will give an insightful presentation to inspire and help refine your practice, setting the tone for the next day.

Day 04: Advanced Sketching Techniques

Day 04 is all about pushing your sketching skills further. The morning session will introduce a more advanced approach to sketching, focusing on complex subjects and compositions. After lunch, we’ll meet at Letná Park for a relaxed yet focused afternoon of personal project work. Here, both Alán and David will provide personalized feedback, helping you hone in on your unique style and technique. Later, we’ll gather for dinner together, where you’ll have time to reflect on your progress and the experiences shared throughout the week.

Day 05: Advanced Sketching Techniques Applied

• July 5th

Day 05 is where everything clicks into place. With two focused workshops, the day is about applying advanced techniques with confidence and intention. The morning session pushes you into complex scenes and stronger compositional decisions, reinforcing structure, value control, and process. By the second workshop, there’s a visible shift. You work more independently, commit to choices, and carry sketches further with less hesitation. With targeted feedback from Alán and David, the focus is refinement, not correction. By the end of the day, the breakthroughs are clear, both on the page and in how you think and decide while sketching.

Day 06: Wrapping Up & Showcasing Your Work

• July 6th

On the final day, we’ll kick off with a collaborative workshop led by both Alán and David, offering hands-on guidance and group discussion to wrap up your learning experience. In the afternoon, you’ll have the opportunity to present your work in a gallery-style format, reflecting on your growth and the skills you’ve developed throughout the retreat. To end on a high note, we’ll enjoy a farewell dinner, where you’ll receive a surprise gift keepsake, and share your final thoughts and experiences from this unforgettable week.

Day 07: Check-Out & Farewell

• July 7th

After 7 days in Prague sketching on our final morning, participants will check out of the hotel and say their goodbyes. There are no scheduled workshops on this day, allowing you to depart at your own pace or take in a last sketching session in Prague before heading home.

We’ll provide recommendations for nearby cafes if you’d like to gather for a final coffee and share your favorite moments from the retreat.

Optional Evening Events & Extras

Throughout the week, there will be opportunities to participate in optional evening events, such as a sunset sketching session at a picturesque rooftop or scenic location. You’ll also have the chance to take part in a cultural activity, visiting a museum or gallery to immerse yourself in Czech art and architecture. If you want to explore more of Prague on your own, we’ll provide recommendations for the best spots for sketching during your free time.

Hotel & Meeting Point

Our home base in Prague is the centrally located Maximilian Hotel, a comfortable and well-designed hotel that works perfectly for a focused sketching retreat.

  • 4 Single Rooms and 5 Shared Rooms available

  • Main meeting hub for the group

We’ll meet here each morning, start our workshop days together, and return here to reset, review work, and connect as a group. Its central location makes it easy to walk to sketching spots, cafés, and evening dinners without needing transport.

We recently had the privilege to host an event organized by See the Lines at Maximilian Hotel in Prague. Alan and David were fantastic from the very beginning; we felt that they treated this trip with extra special care, wanted to be 1000% sure that their guests will have the best possible experience during the workshop. It is truly lovely to welcome guests, who bring a positive vibe and energy to our property – we would love to have them returning to us on a regular basis! We would wholeheartedly recommend See the Lines and looking forward to seeing them again soon!

A Clear Path Into Sketching
“Coming in as a complete beginner, this experience opened up a world of art that always felt closed off before. The workshops gave clear perspective on different styles and techniques, making it easier to understand how to translate what you see onto paper. What stood out most was how motivating it felt, paired with teaching that truly meets students where they are, no matter their starting point.”

A Gift of Time to Be Creative
“I came into the Prague workshop with almost no experience. I had only taken one course before and usually painted about once a month because life is busy. What made this experience special was having real time to be creative in a beautiful city, without pressure or distraction. The teaching felt accessible and clear, especially learning perspective, geometry, watercolor, and the shadows-first approach, things I never would have figured out on my own. Even as a beginner, I felt supported by both the teachers and the group. It felt comfortable, welcoming, and honestly like a gift to have uninterrupted time to focus only on art and nothing else.”

Your Co-Host and Workshop Teacher

Alán Ramiro  | @seethelines

Alán is a travel sketching artist and educator with a background in architecture.

Before becoming a full-time artist, he spent over a decade working and training in architecture. That foundation shapes how he sees and teaches drawing, structure first, clear decisions, strong composition, and then paints freely.

Today, Alán leads immersive sketching workshops and retreats around the world while teaching weekly through his Sketching Life program. His approach blends ink, watercolor, and architectural thinking to help students simplify complex scenes and sketch with confidence on location.

His focus is not polished illustrations.
It’s learning how to see, decide, and finish a sketch in real conditions.

I Can See the Lines Now!
“Before joining SeeTheLines Portugal Sketching Retreat, I was a beginner painter who had never painted a landscape. With Alán’s guidance and the group’s support, I gained confidence to share my work and learned how to paint freer watercolor washes and truly understand two-point perspective.

Now I can’t not see the lines, perspective is everywhere! The retreat was so well organized, with inspiring locations and a creative community that made learning joyful and transformative.”

Claudia

Beginner Painter New to Urban Sketching

Let’s go sketch!
Haven’t sketched in over 10 years and started again during the group trip to Morocco. I tend to box myself in and want to get every detail and make things perfect. However, that took the fun out of everything and kept me from sketching. Alan’s step by step teaching style, patience, and clear direction gave the group amo to tackle different scenes. It was an absolute blast learning watercolor and sketching techniques that loosened me up and gave me the freedom to be creative and let the drawings come to life. Not only was this trip a blast sketching wise, but the support and friendships that were formed in the group will last a lifetime. If you’re hesitant to join a group trip, are afraid of letting the watercolor flow, or if perfectionism is keeping you from creating – stop what you’re doing right now and go sign up for one of Alan’s sketching workshops or group trips! What are you waiting for?! You won’t regret it. I’m looking forward to the next trip I can join. Yallah, yallah!!
